Big Little Lies: Series Premiere

Based on the book with the same name by Liane Moriarty, the HBO mini series is about three mothers who have children in the first grade at a public school in Monterey. Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) is new to town and she immediately becomes friends with Madeline Martha McKenzie (Reese Witherspoon) and Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman. Madeline's best friend is Celeste (Nicole Kidman), she's married to a younger man and has twin sons. Jane's son, Ziggy is accused of choking Renata Klein's (Laura Dern) daughter. Ziggy denies it and his mother believes him which draws a battle line between she and Renata.

Through the course of the episode, it is revealed that Madeline isn't happy with the fact that her ex husband Nathan (James Tupper) is married to Bonnie (Zo Kravitz), a young yoga instructor. Her teenage daughter is also building a relationship with Bonnie and this stirs some worry within her. Celeste doesn't seem happy in her marriage and is scared of her husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgrd). Jane's reason for moving back is still a mystery yet to be unraveled. A murder occurs shortly after she reappears in town, but the victim is unknown. Could she possibly be involved?

After seeing the trailer, the show already had that feeling of a story line that has been done before but I saw it anyway. The first episode felt a bit dull but the show runners are doing a good job keeping the mystery alive. The audience is eager to gain knowledge of Jane's past, Celeste's struggle with domestic violence and who is going to be murdered. To be honest I wasn't really excited to watch the show, regardless of all the big cast names. It's definitely not going to be on my list of top 30 shows but then again, it's going to be seven episodes so there's no harm in watching.

The major themes of the first episode, "Somebody's Dead" are parenthood and relationships. It also seems like every character is rich with gigantic houses by the beach that would make you roll your eyes a little. The major characters play their roles well, making it easier for the story not to get overshadowed by their big names. Jane and Celeste seem like the ones with the big secrets and I can't wait for them to be revealed. I'm still not sure of the whole narrative technique. I think it messes up the flow and becomes annoying after a while. It was a good first episode and I hope the story gets interesting as the show continues.

RANDOMS
Is there anyone in this world that isn't in love with Zo Kravitz? She's so beautiful!
I'm happy I didn't read the book so I can watch the show without knowing the entire story.
