Snowfall Season One Finale Review- "The Rubicon"

There's no denying that this season has been intense for the four major characters and everyone around them. The first season of Snowfall was all over the place but the by the 8th episode, I was convinced the writers finally got their thoughts together. The pilot episode was good and I felt this was a show I was going to fall in love with, but it became a struggle to watch after the third episode. They got my attention back after Leon was shot in the final scene of the 8th episode. Franklin got himself into a very dangerous business which I still think he hasn't fully realized. He wants to hustle hard and make sure he's mom doesn't have to bother herself about anything, but she's disappointed when she finds out about her son's extra curricular activities. The neighborhood knows that he's the boss and he's really all about the money. Damson Idris brings his character of Franklin to life and I couldn't see anyone else playing this role. He's the major reason I'm still invested in Snowfall.

Don't get me wrong, the other characters and actors are phenomenal, but I think Franklin's story line is more interesting to watch. You can understand where he's coming from even though you know he shouldn't sell drugs. He's seeking financial stability for his family and loved ones. A defining moment for Franklin was when he told Ray Ray to kill his own man to prove his loyalty. I knew there was no coming back from that.
Teddy, the CIA operative who got himself deep into the cocaine business, wasn't my favorite story line. What was the motivation behind everything he did? He only got interesting when he shot Alejandro for murdering Veronica. I was genuinely shocked when he did this. Before this scene, I didn't care if Teddy lived or died. I'm still trying to figure out where he fits into Snowfall and I hope it'll make more sense in the second season.

The same can be said for the Lucia and Gustavo plot. It was boring from the beginning and got interesting in the final episode where Lucia and Gustavo hire a few men to kill her uncle and his men. It's obvious that Lucia is very ambitious and she won't let her uncle or anyone get in the way of her business. With Snowfall, you start getting bored or confused with the story line and then something interesting happens to bring your focus back.

"The Rubicon" served as a good season finale, even though the previous episodes had so many errors. It'll take patience to get through the first season of Snowfall but I'm confident that it'll get better. FX has renewed the drama for a second season.
