Review-The Tribunal (2017)

The Tribunal is the third movie this year from the Africa Magic project with Award winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. The other two include Omugwo and Roti. The story follows Ifeanyi Imo (Damilola Ogunsi), a banker who sues his boss, Arese Abebe (Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde) claiming she harassed him verbally due to the fact that he's an albino. The tribunal brings together a struggling lawyer, Mr Disu (Funsho Adeolu) who uses his car as his office and a fresh law school graduate, Tawa (Ade Laoye) on the Plaintiff's side and a few big guns on the Defense's side to determine if Mr Imo's claims are true or just fabricated lies.
The cast was amazing and they all played their roles perfectly, especially Omotola, who literally just glared at Ogunsi for more than half of the film and she looked really good doing it. Bimbo Manuel, Nobert Young and Carol King proved to us why they've been in the game for this long with their stellar performances. Ogunsi also did a good job with his role and you could literally feel his pain whenever he gave examples of how his boss harassed him. The movie focuses on the discrimination albino's face in the society, the directing was flawless but after about an hour, 15 minutes, it started to feel like I'd been in the theater for more than two hours. If you know me personally, then you know that I'm a huge fan of Afolayan and his works, but The Tribunal didn't really do justice for me in terms of the story. It felt like a really really long boring version of an episode of The Good Wife. The story felt a bit empty and I wished the script had more depth. There was lack of character development and I wasn't too thrilled with the way it ended. I love the fact that this film is very different from the Nollywood films we usually see everyday in the cinemas and I commend Afolayan for continuing to give us exceptional films, I just expected more from this particular one. Nevertheless, I'll still look forward to his next project, which I hope will be better than this one.
