Roti (2017)

Kunle Afolayan never ever disappoints with every movie he writes, produces or directs. After seeing Figurine a few years ago, I never looked back. He's my favorite Nigerian director and I always look forward to seeing what he has in store for his viewers. His directing skills keep getting better each year and I never have a reason not to see any of his movies. It was no different for Roti, a story about a couple (played by Kate Henshaw & Kunle Afolayan) who lose there five year old son after a brief illness. Four years after Roti's death, Diane (Henshaw) sees a little boy who looks exactly like her dead son. The only difference is, the boy has a different family and a different name. This throws her off balance as she struggles with this new found mystery. One thing I felt could have been better with this film was the quality of the visuals which was really really poor for a Kunle Afolayan film. Maybe they were going for a particular vibe but it looked low budget. It's a Psychological Thriller but that doesn't mean the audience should struggle with seeing what was on their screen.

The acting by the main cast which consisted of Afolayan, Henshaw and Fathia Balogun delivered on their performances. I loved the fact that Diane looked like she was actually grieving. Her face was bare with no makeup which is different from what I've seen in a lot of Nollywood films. A few of them wake up in the morning with a contoured and highlighted face which is totally wrong. Afolayan currently has a three movie deal with Africa Magic Films. The first to be released was "Omugwo" which I absolutely loved, "Roti" is the second film and "Tribunal" starring Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Nobert Young, Omowunmi Dada, Gloria Young and Ade Laoye will be the third. As Nigeria's Speilberg, I feel like Afolayan shouldn't star in his movies anymore. I think he has gotten to a level where he should just control things from behind the camera. His directing skills are undeniable and I definitely look forward to seeing Tribunal.
