The Mummy is a reboot by The Dark Universe of the 1999 classic movie of the same name starring Brendan Frasser and Rachel Weisz. This one stars Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, a former US military officer, New Girl's Jake Johnson as Chris Vail and Annabelle Wallis as Jenny Halsey. Nick and his partner in crime Chris discover the tomb of Princess Ahmanet who was buried alive over five thousand years ago after selling her soul to the god Set and killing her family while trying to get a hold of the throne. Jenny, who's an archeologist arrives at the tomb to investigate and they end up waking up the mummy. They put the coffin on a plane and on the way, Chris gets possessed by Ahmanet's power and stabs Colonel Greenway (Courtney B. Vance). He also tries to stab Nick but he shoots him dead and the plane gets attacked by Crows causing it to crash. Before it crashes, Nick gives the parachute to Jenny. He wakes up in a morgue and starts seeing his dead friend Chris, he's also having visions of Ahmanet which means she chose him for the ritual which involves a dagger and a red jewel. Ahmanet tries to get the jewel and kills Jenny in the process. Nick is able to get the dagger and stabs himself with it. He's now possessed by Set, so he sucks the life out of Ahmanet, turning her back into a mummy. He brings Jenny back to life and tells her goodbye before disappearing. They lower Ahmanet's corpse is into a pool of mercury so she doesn't come back to life. In the desert, it is revealed that Nick brought Chris back to life and they ride off on horses. Back in London, Dr. Jekyll tells Jenny that as long as a part of Nick's humanity remains, he will continue to search for a way to become human again.

This movie was a bit predictable but I enjoyed watching it. With a movie like this, getting the right cast would make it more interesting to watch but I think they missed the mark with Tom Cruise. This a typical Tom Cruise role, nothing new or Oscar worthy. The jerk who ends up saving the day. I felt bad that they put Jake Johnson in the middle of this. He deserved more than being a gross corpse zombie who came in at intervals as sort of a comic relief. I think Sofia Boutella was an excellent choice and I wished I saw more of her character. She really didn't do much more than sucking the life out of people and waving her hands in a weird way. Instead of the movie being about her, it became all about Mr Cruise, who I still think wasn't an excellent choice for this role. Brendan Frasser did a better job. I also didn't think Annabelle Wallis and Tom Cruise had enough chemistry. Their romance didn't seem real at all. The CGI was good but I felt it could have been better.

The Dark Universe is trying to build up strong characters, but they would have to up their game if their trying to smash box offices and make the critics love them. Using an A-list star like Tom Cruise doesn't really change anything. I like the fact that the movie was just under 2 hours but the action in the climax was pretty low. After building up to that final scene, I expected it to be more exciting than the previous fights but it wasn't. Overall, The Mummy is a good movie which I enjoyed watching but it's still not better than the first two Mummy movies with Brendan Frasser, the third on was just a waste of movie time.

The sad thing is that some revivals are doing terrible at the box office and with the critics. Even with big names in the casts, it still doesn't change anything. An example is Baywatch starring Dwayne Johnson and now The Mummy which flopped in North America making 34 million in its first weekend. This isn't a good start for the Dark Universe and I really hope they do better with their next film "The Bride of Frankenstein" which will star Johnny Depp.
