House of Cards: Season Five Recap

This is a recap of the fifth season of Netflix's House of Cards and it contains a lot of spoilers so don't go beyond this point if you're yet to see the season. Last season ended with Claire and Frank watching the execution of James Miller, the hostage taken by some radicalized American citizens who pledged their allegiance to ICO. Before the episode ends, Claire breaks the fourth wall by looking into the camera with Frank. In this moment, I knew Claire was gone for sure. She had always been a schemer like Frank and she showed this trait this season. In the beginning of the fifth season, they were getting closer to the elections and Frank together with his loyal Chief of Staff Doug set out a massive cyber attack through hacker Aidan Macallan. The attack slows down the Internet and wipes out thousands of files and they pin the attack on ICO.

On Election Day, the turnout at the polls are really low and the Underwood's know they're going to lose to Will Conway so they stage an attack in Tennessee and blame it on an ICO sympathizer. Frank calls Will to concede unofficially which only done to make him think he had already won the election. They call the Ohio governor to close the polls due to security reasons because Conway was already winning in this state. The two states are unable to confirm the votes. Claire manages to secure votes from the senate as Vice President and is sworn in as acting President. Weeks later, she orders an election in Ohio and Tennessee. Frank attends a meeting of powerful men at Elysian Fields. The secret society is based on real life Bohemian Grove. The Underwood's leak various files putting Conway in a very bad position, thus making Frank win Tennessee and Ohio. He's sworn in as President and Claire as Vice President.

Meanwhile, the Washington Herald is looking into the death of Zoe Barnes and Hammershmidt continues to get tips from an unknown White House leaker. The Underwood's convince Doug to take the fall for Zoe's death and he agrees. An impeachment hearing is set against Frank and he resigns. Claire goes to see Tom Yates because she's concerned he knows too much. She ends up killing him and tells Mark Usher to clean in up. The Underwood's send contractors working for them to ram LeAnn's car off the road causing an accident. Frank tells Claire that he was the leak and this had been his plan all along so she could become the President. He says she needs to give him a presidential pardon which she agrees to do. When the time came, she ends up going back on her word. She gets multiple calls from Frank which she ignores and the season ends with her breaking the fourth wall for the second time in season five and tells the viewers "My Turn". I definitely enjoyed binge watching this season and I can't wait for the sixth season to premiere next year.
