Mr & Mrs: Chapter 2 (2017)

Mr & Mrs: Chapter 2 finally hit cinema on April 21, 2017 and it really didn't live up to expectations. The first installment starring Nse Ikpe Etim & Joseph Benjamin graced our screens in 2012 and everyone loved it, I saw it like three times. The story line together with the impeccable acting of the cast members made this movie worth watching over and over again. The same cannot be said for Chapter 2. It starred Chidi Mokeme and one of my favorites, Rita Dominic. Directed by Teco Benson, this movie has a totally different story line and involves three couples. Although, it still had the marriage theme just like the first one. The first couple Kobi (Chidi Mokeme) and Sharon are trying to save their marriage while having financial issues. Their kids are also getting involved in dangerous activities. After his father's issue with the EFCC causes all their assets to be frozen, the family starts depending on the salary of Sharon. Kobi eventually tells her to quit her job to take care of her family. The second couple Zola (Munachi Abii) has been in a relationship with her boyfriend Timi for five years and just after he proposes to her, she finds out that he has a seven year old daughter with a baby mama in Ghana. Then there's Kobi's father, Senator Dede who gets married to a much younger woman after divorcing Kobi's mom, Ranke. Ranke comes up with different lies to try and get her husband back.
This movie has so many issues, I don't think I'll be able to write down each of them. The fact that it had very little publicity was already a huge problem. The production of this movie was really poor, why do they cut the scenes after a few seconds ? It seemed like the characters were not done talking. There were also a lot of 5 second scenes which were very questionable and completely irrelevant to the plot. One example is of Zola and Timi talking about their wedding and all of a sudden they are shown running upstairs with a tablet. There was no build up to the scene, they literally just skipped from one scene to the other. The movie also talked about the issue of lesbianism and drug abuse but left the viewers hanging by not exploring these topics properly. What was the whole point of including it in the story line? I can't help but compare this movie to the first one and even with the soundtrack, it still didn't feel the same. A few of the cast mates weren't totally great with their scenes but Munachi really did well considering the fact that this is one of her first movies. It was a total waste of amazing actors like Chidi Mokeme and Rita Dominic. Immediately the credits rolled, literally everyone in the theater kissed their teeth. I was a bit surprised because I thought I was the only one not feeling the movie. I don't think they would have bothered making this movie, it didn't live up to the first one in any way.
