The new USA Network drama which premiered Thursday, August 2, didn't waste anytime getting straight to the action. In the first few scenes before the murder, we see Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel), a married woman with a kid who seemed like she had a few demons she was fighting. She goes on a beach trip with her family but ends up committing a very horrific act by stabbing a man to death in front of her husband and son. She's left surprised and has no idea what pushed her to do this. The investigator attached to the case becomes a bit obsessed and is determined to dig into her past and figure out why she did what she did.

The Sinner is based on the best selling German novel of the same name by Petra Hammesfahr and the story isn't about "who committed the crime?", we already know who did it, the question is "why"? The episode was quite gloomy and & through flashbacks, it becomes bvious that Cora is struggling with a childhood trauma. Biel does a solid work as Cora & so does her husband Mason (Christopher Abbott) who is struggling to understand his wife's actions. Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) seems like he has everything under control but he also has a few skeletons of his own in his personal life.

He has a kinky relationship with a waitress and I couldn't help but wonder why a lot of these shows make their characters this way. How does Ambrose being in a masochistic relationship affect the story or make it better? There's also the question of why he's so invested in Cora's case. The Pilot had a good feel but at the same time, it felt like they broke down a 45 minutes police procedural into 8 long episodes. This single incident is what's going to drive the show because now we all want to know "why" Cora killed a man in broad daylight. I'm convinced that with more character developments, the Crime Drama will feel less clich� & more interesting to watch. A new episode of The Sinner airs next Wednesday, August 9th.
