Review: Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk"

I'd been looking forward to seeing Christopher Nolan's (Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Inception) Dunkirk because he's one filmmaker that never disappoints with his work and he delivers on every level with Dunkirk. The war movie which is set in 1940 tells the story of a group of Allied soldiers from Great Britain, France & Belgium. They find themselves surrounded by the Germans on the beach of Dunkirk, France. The evacuation of almost 400,000 men becomes threatened when they are constantly attacked by the Germans. I'm trying so hard not to give too much of the movie away but I was blown away (no pun intended) by how beautiful this movie was.

The movie has a perfect cast and with no true lead character, they all stand out in their respective roles. The dialogue is minimal but the way they express the fear and emotion that comes with being part of a war is just amazing. There's no point where the movie becomes dull, it's gripping from the first scene till the credits roll. I like the fact that the movie isn't excruciatingly long. Nolan keeps it under an hour 47 minutes and every minute of it is super intense. He also avoids going in too deep about all the details of the Second World War and goes straight to how the soldiers on the air, sea and land survived the horrific situation.

The movie also has stunning visuals, It looks horrific but serene. You'll understand this, only if you see Dunkirk. My favorite part about this movie is the music score which literally played in the background from the beginning to the end. Hans Zimmer is such an amazing composer. The sound, especially the increasingly fast ticking clock, built suspense and made everything feel more intense. From your seat you can understand how these soldiers feel in the upside down boat that is about to sink, in the water filled with flames from gasoline and on the beach trying to find a way back home. I'll like to point out that I was blown away by Harry Styles' acting! It was excellent. Fionne Whitehead who plays Tommy also delivers a stellar performance. I've never seen a movie like Dunkirk before, I left the theater amazed and in awe of how beautiful and intense it was. I hope I'm not reaching by saying this movie is a masterpiece and it deserves to be placed in a museum. I genuinely enjoyed watching and It's something everyone needs to see. Drop whatever you're doing and go watch Dunkirk. It's an experience you won't regret.
